Claiming Your Credits

From your initial tax bill, you will subtract any of the nonrefundable tax credits that apply to you in 2011:

• the credit for child and dependent care expenses claimed on Form 2441
• the credit for the elderly or the disabled claimed on Schedule R
• the the child tax credit claimed on Form 8812
• the education credits claimed on Form 883
• the retirement savings contribution credit claimed on Form 8880
• the adoption credit
• the foreign tax credit claimed on Form 1116
• the mortgage interest credit, claimed on Form 8396
• the residential energy credits, claimed on Form 5965
• the credit for prior year's minimum tax, claimed on Form 8801
• the general business credit
• any other credit for which you are eligible

Note that none of these credits can be claimed on Form 1040EZ, and only the first five can be claimed on Form 1040A. The full list of credits may be claimed on Form 1040.
