File an amended tax return if changes to your income, deductions, credits, filing status, or dependents are needed after the IRS accepts your original return.

How to file a federal amended return:

  1. Wait until the IRS accepts your original return.
  2. Print out your original return and write "Original" across the top. Keep this for your records.
  3. Make the necessary changes to your original return using CompleteTax.
  4. Print out 2 copies of the changed return and write "Amended" across the top. Keep 1 for your records and send 1 to the IRS (see step 7).
  5. Print out Form 1040X.
  6. Fill out Form 1040X. Use the Form 1040X instruction guide to help complete the form.
  7. Mail the changed return (step 4), the completed Form 1040X (step 6) and any supporting materials to the appropriate address found in the Form 1040X instruction guide. The IRS does not allow an amended return to be e-filed.

How to file a state amended return:

  1. Wait until your state accepts your original return.
  2. Print out your original return and write "Original" across the top. Keep this for your records.
  3. Make the necessary changes to your original return using CompleteTax.
  4. Print out 2 copies of the changed return and write "Amended" across the top. Keep 1 for your records and send 1 to the IRS (see step 7).
  5. Print out Form 1040X.
  6. Fill out Form 1040X. Use the Form 1040X instruction guide to help complete the form.
  7. Contact your state's Department of Revenue to find out what form to use to amend your state return.
  8. Fill out the form your state Department of Revenue tells you to complete.
  9. Mail the changed return (step 4), the completed Form 1040X (step 6), the completed state form (step 8) and any supporting materials to the address provided by your state's Department of Revenue.
