If your federal tax return has been filed and accepted by the IRS, and you find you need to add more information to the return or correct a mistake, you will have to file an amended return.
An amended return is filed using federal Form 1040X that is available here. Our program does not prepare federal Form 1040X, nor can this form be filed electronically. Read below for instructions on how to fill out and mail the form to the IRS.
If you are expecting a refund, you should wait until you receive the refund and then file the amended return. This takes into account any changes or corrections the IRS may have made to your return.
Here are the steps to follow:
- Keep your original printed copy of your return as your beginning numbers (we suggest writing "Original - Amended" on the top of the first page).
- Log on to the program to access your current return and make your corrections. Once you have done this, calculate the return and print a copy. Mark this new, corrected return as "Amended." When you log off the program your information will be updated. Next year, your return will show the correct amounts that you filed for 2007.
- Download and print Form 1040X from here. The information from the original and amended returns is used to fill out Form 1040X.
- Mail the amended return and Form 1040X to the IRS address provided here.
- Remember to keep copies of the amended return and Form 1040X for your files..
